14-06-17 / ENEA and AGROPAL (Spanish co-operative) present SCOoPE project in the COGECA Business Forum in Energy Transition and Agri-Cooperatives.

Carlo Alberto Campiotti, Head of Agriculture at UTEE (Technical Unit Energy Efficiency) in ENEA, and partner of SCOoPE presented the project to the attendants of this event, all of them related to and interested in energy issues in the agrifood sector.

Under the presentation Energy efficiency and renewable energy: drivers for agri-cooperatives business models, Carlo Alberto Campiotti showed the current energy consumption in the EU for producing agrifood products. This energy is mainly used for cooling conservations, both for frozen meat or vegetables and for fresh products (IV gamma products). As he showed, Italy and Spain are the most energy consuming countries for producing and processing vegetables, which is also due to their large productions. The recommendations given by Carlo Alberto, aiming at reducing energy consumption, were included in the following proposals and actions:

Moreover, and also mentioned in the Business Forum by Alejandro Velasco from AGROPAL (an Spanish co-operative) cereals’ straw resulting as subproduct when processing winter cereals could be used as source of thermal energy, and so reducing thermal energy demanded by industries such as the cereals or fodder dryers, and for producing steam needed in their dairy factories. As he explained, his co-operative modified the boiler for burning cereals’ straw and they have already decrease their use of fossil fuels.

Some other interesting projects and initiatives related to Energy Transition on Agri-Cooperatives, where also presented in this Forum.

About SCOoPE project

The SCOoPE project was granted for funding by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme in the call H2020-EE-2015-3-MarketUptake.

The SCOoPE Project objective is to reduce energy consumption, by implementing cost-effective energy solutions, at a short term in a range between 10% and 15% directly in 81 businesses in the sectors of crop drying, meat and poultry, dairy, and fruit and vegetables transformation. This reduction should be achieved without any decrease in the production capacity of the companies and maintaining good socioeconomic and environmental conditions.

For reaching these objectives, the project will work with the uptake of specific and cross-cutting innovative technologies and techniques, whose efficacy has been proven in other industrial sectors different from the agro-food sector, but not being familiar o rarely implemented in the agro-food sector.

On the other hand, the SCOoPE project pursues larger savings in the medium term with new affordable intelligent energy solutions, specifically by proving in operational environment the “Collaborative Energy Management Systems”.
